Metaphor

A metaphor is "a figure of speech in which an implied comparison is made between two unlike things that actually have something in common".In other words a metaphor is used when a thing is refereed to something which has something in common. An example of a metaphor can be "Fresh as the daisy", this is an example of metaphor because since they are talking about freshness they use daisies because daisies are fresh. Many other examples of irony can be found in "The Waste Land" By T.S Eliot. One example of a metaphor in the poem is found in the very first sentence.

In the poem The Force That Through The Green Fuse Drives The Flower By Dylan Thomas, the author uses metaphor in a very complex way. One example of a metaphor in the poem can be found in the first sentence of the poem. "The force that through the green fuse drives the flower". How is this sentence a metaphor? This sentence is a metaphor because the "green fuse" is used to refer to the stem of the flower and the "force" that goes through the green fuse is the force of life not only for the flower but for him aswell. The whole poem uses metaphors in order to give us the sense that nature and man kind.

In the peom A Meditation for his Mistress By Robert Herrick he uses a bunch of metaphors to show the readers how superb he finds his mistress to be. One example of a metaphor can be the second stanza. This is a metaphor because the author compares his mistress to a lovely July flower. Even though he uses a flower to show us how lovely she is he goes on to explain how that can easily change

In the poem by e e Cummings examples of metaphors are seen in the entire poem. To start the poem is not written horizontally but vertically which is rather awkward, But the author had a purpose because the way the poem is written is a metaphor to show how when a leaf falls it is on its own. The shape of the poem is also a metaphor because its in the shape of a one.
